Our mission is to prepare students to excel academically and compete successfully for admission to high-performing public, private and parochial high schools in NYC. Challenge Prep offers a rigorous academic curriculum within a safe and supportive school environment. We cultivate intellectual, social, emotional and ethical development of our students and support them in achieving mastery of the 28 NYS Learning Standards and the Common Core Learning Standards.
Since 2010, Challenge Preparatory Charter School has been changing our community one scholar at a time through 21st Century education that comes from an exciting mix of research, academic rigor, and innovation. The first year of our charter, we began with Kindergarten and 1st Grade. The 2017-18 Academic Year represents the "maturity" of our charter with our first class of 8th Graders.
Challenge Prep is the realization of the dream of CEO and Founder, Rev. Dr. Les Mullings, and many government leaders, talented teachers, passionate parents, and community supporters have contributed to the school's ongoing success. We have an academic program that builds students’ foundational academic skills, content knowledge, and motivation along with our expectation that each will Challenge Prep scholar will succeed in high school, in college, and beyond.
Challenge Prep’s educational philosophy promotes high levels of academic achievement and tailored instruction to ensure that academic needs of all students are met. We have a robust staff beyond our teachers that provides Student Support Services. Challenge Prep’s founders believe that good instruction recognizes the interrelation of content knowledge and higher order thinking and that, accordingly, good instruction should reflect a balanced approach to learning.
To that end, Challenge Prep offers arts education in Visual Art and Music as well as after-school programs led by teachers and staff including Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, basketball, cheerleading and theater.
Challenge Prep is Different
Imagine a place children love to go…a place they are challenged…a place where their extraordinary potential is recognized and their accomplishments are rewarded. Imagine a place where children thrive academically and socially. Imagine a safe place…a place where strong minds and strong character are equally valued, and each is nurtured. This is the environment we provide our scholars.
Challenge Prep has a population of students that reflects that of the public schools in Community School District 27. Accordingly, we've tailored our instructional approach to meet the needs of our racially and ethnically diverse students.
Our community is not unlike many others across the nation, but the Challenge Prep approach is. We're are squarely taking aim at the causes and issues related to local poverty, the needs of English Language Learners and special needs students, including gifted and talented children. Challenge Prep leadership works hard to provide the highest quality instruction and support to all our students, with excellent assessment and remediation strategies. Improvements in state test scores are a continued focus from administration and teachers alike.
Toward Closing the Achievement Gap
We’ve extended the school day for all scholars, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, and extended our school year to 190 days. We also offer Saturday Academy seasonally to offer students more time to achieve their academic goals.
